Project Description

The Material Handling Equipment (MHE) expansion project at our sort center was focused around process automation and involved building conveyors for automatic sorting and scanning of incoming packages. This task was carried out by an outside vendor alongside the Amazon Robotics expansion. However, the success of this project also relied heavily on the work performed by the local IT team, which I was a part of.

One of the key tasks performed by the local IT team was decommissioning and relocating of several Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) cabinets. Additionally, I was involved in the installation of an additional IDF cabinet that required previously-configured switches to support the new equipment. This required attention to detail, careful planning and coordination with other teams and stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption to operations.

Another major step in this project was configuring and installing cameras for the SCADA Control Center to provide visibility on the automated package sorting operation. This allowed for real-time monitoring of the sorting process and helped to identify any issues or inefficiencies that needed to be addressed.

Aside from being heavily involved in the expansion as a whole, I was directly involved in the relocation of the site's heat sensors, which was also necessary to ensure that the temperature in the sort center was maintained at the appropriate level for the safe handling and processing of packages. This process involved removing DNS entries from the server, procuring additional heat sensors, configuring them on the monitoring portal, and ensuring that they are connected to the correct VLAN before being deployed to the correct locations.

Finally, the local IT team deployed the necessary equipment to process incoming packages and maximize efficiency and customer satisfaction. This included configuring and installing new switches and other network equipment, as well as providing support for the various software and systems needed to manage the sorting and processing of packages.

Overall, the work performed by the local IT team was critical to the success of the material handling equipment expansion project. By configuring and installing cameras, relocating IDFs, installing new equipment, and deploying necessary IT infrastructure, the local IT team played a crucial role in maximizing efficiency and customer satisfaction in the handling and processing of incoming and outgoing packages.
